After beginning his career with two polarizing comedies, the entertaining Zombieland and shameful 30 Minutes or Less, American director Ruben Fleischer departs from familiar ground and delves into the underground mob scene for his third feature. However, in tackling the crime genre the emerging filmmaker shows his naivety and inexperience with a derivative crowd-pleaser that is so focussed on borrowing ideas from previous classics that it fails to establish its own identity.

Oscars Guy: A critical look at Seth Macfarlane as the choice to host the 85th Academy Awards.
Recently Oscars host Seth MacFarlane took to the stage alongside Hollywood starlet Emma Stone to reveal the nominations for the fast-approaching 85th Academy Awards. MacFarlane is the first host of the prestigious ceremony to also reveal the nominees since Charlton Heston in 1972. Using the opportunity as a dry run for ceremony night the comedy writer abandoned the traditionally serious approach of merely reading from a list and instead opted for announcing the nominations with a sense of humour. While no one is discouraging a refreshing approach, many commentators were left dismayed by his attitude, annoyed by the “personal attacks” within his material and debating whether he would be a good Oscars host at all.

The middle part of 2012 proved incredibly popular for the superhero genre as three monumental blockbusters dominated the summer releases. Whedon’s stunning culmination of Marvel’s most famous heroes in Avengers Assemble, the breathtaking conclusion to Nolan’s trilogy and even a new Spiderman film – each of these films, though focussed on different concepts, are all anchored to the same genre shift.

Another novel adaptation this way comes.
At first doubts were cast over The Help as it seemed that it, like many others before it, would be centered on a hurriedly made screenplay. More recent book adaptations, such as One Day, are rushed into production which makes the films suffer as they fail to live up to the reputation of the novel. The screenplay for The Help was not rushed; in fact the timing couldn’t have been better. The script was finished around the same time as the book, because the rights to adapt the novel were sold to little known director, and close friend of the author, Tate Taylor back in 2008.
