Special Correspondents Review

The latest theatrical effort from Marmite-man Ricky Gervais could easily be written off as a good sketch idea stretched too thin, but there’s a certain charm to its simplicity.

The unique twist aside, it’s a mainstream rom-com underpinned by a surface-scratching satire of contemporary journalism that’s playful rather than biting and will surely disappoint those expecting anything more. The romance is superficial and the comedy sparse, but I found myself laughing throughout and genuinely caring for Ricky Gervais’ heavy-hearted hero.

The result is a film that’s greater than the sum of its parts and far from the terrible experience many have labelled it.
